Abstract:
This volume presents selected accounts from the Household Books of Lord William Howard of Naworth Castle, Cumberland, covering the years 1612 to 1640. These records document the receipts and expenditures of this northern estate, including details of rents, provisions, servants? wages, household expenses, travel, and estate improvements. They provide valuable insight into the administration of a great house, local prices, wages, and customs in early 17th-century England. In addition to illustrating the economic and social life of the period, they shed light on the character of Lord William Howard and the conditions of the Border region during his time.
